Course Synopsis

Together with the students of Taubman college the travel seminar strives to explore the intricate relationships between architecture, art, and science and their interdependencies in the development of design concepts. Architecture as a discipline has a long history in these synergetic relationships exemplified by the work of architects such as Francesco Borromini, Antoni Gaudi and Louis Kahn. Design Ecologies explores how the multifaceted sources emerge in a consistent and uncompromising design, which is capable of positioning itself within the lineage of architectural production and history. To experience an environment which is actively engaging in a Design Ecology consisting of art and science the students will visit CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, the center of particle physics research in Europe and home of the LHC, the most complex machine ever built by human kind. CERN´s art program primary mission is to create inspirational bonds between the scientists at CERN and the art and architecture world.
