Within moments of arrival, one imbibes the sanctity of the campus, and observes the stark contrast this oasis of research presents to the world around. I am trained to understand and appreciate built environments, and spatial design that delights and inspires. And what I see at the campus is highly inspiring because it moves the spirit. This quality clearly does not come from attention to appearances. Nor does it come from being timeless or from a high construction quality (which is not to say that it's neither). It comes from pure logic that is freely allowed to take its course. That a sanctuary for such a noble cause is allowed to exist is nothing short of a miracle.
The trip to CERN helped put issues regarding designing for science in perspective. It was reaffirming to witness a complete disregard for anything other than the pursuit of scientific advancement. The campus is awe-inspiring and sacred in its own manner and right.
